Avian Influenza: Sanitary Measures to Prevent Entry into Commercial Farms

Senasa provides information to reinforce biosecurity in poultry facilities, following the recent detection of avian influenza in Colombia.

The National Service for Agrifood Health and Quality (Senasa) received a communication from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) warning Latin American and Caribbean countries about the increased risk of spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI).

HPAI is a disease that affects domestic and wild birds and can spread through their feces and respiratory secretions. From September 21 to date, cases have risen across the Americas, mainly due to the start of the migratory season.

In light of this, Senasa recommends that domestic poultry operations strengthen all farm management, hygiene, and biosecurity measures.

- Inspect bird-proof netting.
- Increase cleaning in areas where wild bird droppings accumulate.
- Minimize visits from non-essential personnel.
- Keep a log of visitors and prevent contact with neighboring animals or other species.
- Reduce or eliminate standing water that may attract wild birds.
- Do not take control or scaring measures against birds, such as hunting or destroying their habitat.

Backyard bird owners should also restrict wild birds’ access to water and feed sources in their household coops. Immediate action by the animal health authority helps minimize consequences and optimizes the response, enabling control of this type of disease before it becomes established and spreads.

If clinical signs compatible with the disease are observed in wild and/or domestic birds, or in marine mammals, notify Senasa:
