Poultry farming in Argentina is currently going through a very difficult time after new cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza were confirmed. In a recent interview on the program “Palabra de Campo” on Radio Splendid AM 990, experts discussed the importance of strengthening prevention measures to address the current health situation.
Avian influenza is a disease caused by a virus known as Influenza A virus. It is highly contagious and can evolve rapidly, making it extremely dangerous for birds—both wild species and those raised for commercial production.
The Epidemiological Situation in Buenos Aires
The National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (SENASA) confirmed an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) subtype H5 at a poultry production facility in the district of Bolívar, in the Province of Buenos Aires.
To contain the outbreak, authorities established 3-kilometer sanitary control zones and 7-kilometer surveillance zones around the affected site. This follows the detection of similar cases in other locations such as Ranchos and Lobos.
As a result, Argentina is no longer considered a country free of this disease, and exports of poultry products have been temporarily suspended. For the country to regain disease-free status, the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) requires that no new outbreaks occur for at least 28 days after the last effective disinfection.
The Virus: Pathogenesis and Classification
The virus is classified into two categories depending on its severity:
Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza (LPAI): Causes few or no symptoms in birds.
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI): Causes severe disease, high mortality rates, and significant economic losses.
The virus is highly stable in the environment and spreads easily. For this reason, biosecurity remains the only truly effective protection strategy.
Fusión Pampa Intervention Protocols
In 2025, Fusión Pampa registered with SENASA a series of advanced solutions developed by the French laboratory CEETAL. These solutions are designed to comply with the most demanding disinfection protocols.
To effectively control the viral load on a farm, it is essential to adopt a systemic approach. Managing viral load requires a well-structured plan, and Fusión Pampa together with CEETAL offers solutions designed for this purpose.
1. Cleaning and Degreasing Phase: RAMAJ GEL
Before disinfection, thorough cleaning is essential.
RAMAJ GEL uses a specialized gel formula that adheres to surfaces, allowing longer contact time. This makes it highly effective at removing dirt and biofilms without the need for pre-washing.
It is particularly useful in poultry housing facilities and transport vehicles.
2. Surface and Equipment Disinfection: AGRIGERM 1510
AGRIGERM 1510 is a highly effective disinfectant against a broad range of pathogens. Its efficacy has been proven against H5N1 and H7N1 viruses.
The recommended dosage in high-risk situations is 0.8% (8 ml per 1 liter of water).
Key advantages of AGRIGERM 1510 include:
Formaldehyde-free, making it safer to use
Can be applied even in the presence of animals, without requiring their removal
Helps significantly reduce microbial load
3. Environmental Treatment and Ammonia Control: AGRISTERYL
AGRISTERYL is designed to control pathogens in the environment while also supporting respiratory health in poultry.
Virucidal action: Proven effective against H5N1 and H7N1 viruses at a 1% concentration after 15 minutes of contact.
Application: Nebulizers producing 5–10 micron droplets are recommended. Spraying should be done at the highest possible level above the birds to allow the product to remain suspended in the air for longer.
In addition to disinfection, it reduces ammonia levels and unpleasant odors, improving the respiratory environment for poultry.
Final Biosecurity Recommendations
Prevention must be constant and rigorous. SENASA recommends:
Reinforcing protective mesh to prevent wild birds from entering facilities
Limiting the movement of people and vehicles within farms
Maintaining strict hygiene protocols at all times
Although the disease cannot be transmitted through the consumption of poultry meat or eggs, it represents a major threat to the poultry industry.
With more than 20 years of experience, Fusión Pampa supports producers with cutting-edge technology imported from France, helping protect the health and biosecurity of poultry farms.
